I Dare You… To Tell the Truth

Yeah… We’re back!!! … kind of.

I believe this was, Thursday. Right? Maybe. Anyways, feeling bored about another typical school day, Cat and I decided to not tell a single lie that day. That included no exaggerations and no white lies. We had to be completely honest.

Here are the results.

Well thank goodness nobody asked me, “So what guy do you like, Erin?” or anything embarrassing like that. But throughout the day I noticed how easy it is to lie and how tempted I was. YIKES. This is kind of hard for me to confess. But this is a good thing for me to know. I’m not saying I get into a lot of trouble and lie about it (and that is NOT a lie). I’m saying that I lie quite a bit just to keep the peace. I also noticed that we (or maybe it’s just me) lie a lot just so we can fit in.

Hmmm. Doesn’t it say somewhere in the bible… I don’t know… “Thou shall not lie” Oh wait! DUH!

“You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.” Exodus 20:16

This experiment got me thinking. “What if every time we lied, our noses grew just like Pinocchio?” My conclusion, we would all try a lot harder to tell the truth! But our noses do not grow an inch for every lie we say. That’s why it’s so easy and so tempting to lie rather than telling the truth. We tell ourselves, “It’s just a little white lie. It’s not going to hurt anyone.” Right? WRONG!!!

Lying is lying. It’s not’s not good no matter how you look at it. Just like a square is a square, or a table is a table, no matter how you look at it.

So ask yourself this:

  • What do I lie about?
  • Why do I lie about that?
  • How many of my relationships are based upon lies?

You might be like me, you lie for the sake of keeping everyone happy. But even if you are lying just to keep a hurtful truth from harming someone, it’s going to hurt them even more when they find out about the truth.

I’ll let your brains chew on that one for a while.

Clearing Up

This morning when I checked my phone at 6:30, I was surprised to find that school was 2 hours delayed.

What?!  It’s not even snowing!

I decided to look outside for some answers.

Oh.  That’s why school is closed… you can’t see across the street.

If something is unclear at first, don’t just pass over it.  Investigate!  Since I had some time to kill this morning, I decided to do some reading in Matthew 5 where it has the well-known beatitudes.  I’ve always had trouble understanding what they mean, and this morning was no different.  Instead of giving up on trying to understand the Beatitudes better, I checked out Matthew 5 in The Message.  When I began to read, things started clearing up!

From NIV:

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Now read it from The Message:

“You’re blessed when you’re at the end of your rope. With less of you there is more of God and his rule.

“You’re blessed when you feel you’ve lost what is most dear to you. Only then can you be embraced by the One most dear to you.
“You’re blessed when you’re content with just who you are–no more, no less. That’s the moment you find yourselves proud owners of everything that can’t be bought.
“You’re blessed when you’ve worked up a good appetite for God. He’s food and drink in the best meal you’ll ever eat.
“You’re blessed when you care. At the moment of being “carefull,’ you find yourselves cared for.
“You’re blessed when you get your inside world–your mind and heart–put right. Then you can see God in the outside world.
“You’re blessed when you can show people how to cooperate instead of compete or fight. That’s when you discover who you really are, and your place in God’s family.
“You’re blessed when your commitment to God provokes persecution. The persecution drives you even deeper into God’s kingdom.”

So when something doesn’t make since, don’t shrug it off, but instead try looking at it from a different angle; maybe things will start clearing up.
